What Upon Tales collects, why, and what you can ask us. Last updated 3 November 2026.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you join the waitlist, with where on the page you joined and the founding offer it gives you.
- Your answers, if you answer the questions after joining: how you play, what has let you down, the kind of tale you’d like, how you face trouble, how long you play, where you’d play and the name you give your traveller. Every question can be skipped.
- A cookie that keeps your answers linked to this browser for 30 days, so you can come back and finish. It holds a random key and nothing else, and it is never used for advertising.
- Anonymous daily totals of what happens on the pages (visits, sign-ups, questions answered, dice rolled in the sample turn), with no cookie, address or identifier attached.
- If you have an account: your email to sign you in, and your games (what you write and what the master answers) to run them and keep your journal.
Why
- To send you your invitation and a few notes along the way.
- To build the preview you see at the end of the questions.
- To plan the first invitations, for example who plays on a phone and who has never played before.
- To understand which parts of the pages work.
- We never sell or rent your data, and we don’t use it for advertising.
Who else handles it
- Our hosting provider, where the site and the database run.
- Our email provider, which sends our emails.
- If you play: the AI service that writes the master’s words receives what happens in your game, only to write the next part of the story.
How long we keep it
- Your email and answers stay as long as the waitlist does, or until you ask us to delete them. Your games stay as long as your account does.
Your choices
- You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, or leave the waitlist, by writing to privacy@upontales.com.
- Upon Tales is not meant for anyone under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
- If this page changes in a way that matters, we’ll tell you by email.
